Sensitive Teeth

Are your teeth sensitive?

Among forty million other people in the United States, you could be experiencing Dentin Hypersensitivity. This condition is characterized by sharp or abrupt pain triggered by hot, cold, sweet or sour foods, touch, or even cold air. This condition can be aggravating and even inhibit your ability to enjoy many of the foods you love. Although this condition is quite common, its symptoms are similar to more severe tooth problems. If your experiencing any kind of pain, please consult Dr.Denny as soon as possible. It may save your teeth.

What is Dentin Hypersensitivity?

In order to understand why teeth become sensitive, it's important to know the structural components of our teeth. A tooth is comprised of several layers. The most recognizable is the enamel layer. This is a protective layer comprised of the hardest substance in the body. An additional protective layer called cementum coats the root portion of the tooth. Below the enamel and cementum layers is the Dentin. The dentin layer contains small tubes which connect to the central nerve of the tooth( the pulp or root canal).

When the Enamel or Cementum layer is lost due to wear or a cavity, the tubes in the dentin are exposed. Stimulation of these areas by hot, cold, sweet, sour, or touch, irritates the central nerve of the tooth causing pain.
